Stephen Brauer joined Hunter engineering in 1971, becoming president of this manufacturer of auto-servicing equipment a decade later. During 2000 campaign stay overs in St. Louis, George W. Bush stayed at Brauer’s 11-acre estate outside the city. Brauer and Pioneers William DeWitt and Mercer Reynolds are part owners of the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cardinals demanded a new, bond-financed stadium in 2000, despite recent major expenditures by the city to remodel Busch Stadium. Brauer and three other Missouri Pioneers, Adele Hall, Sam Fox and John Mahaffey, flew to Austin in early 1999 to discuss a presidential bid with then-Governor George W. Bush. President Bush appointed Bauer--who was an aide to the Army Secretary under the first President Bush--as U.S. Ambassador to Belgium in 2001 (see Jeffrey Marcus). Bilateral relations were prickly due to Belgium’s opposition to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. The U.S. also objected to a Belgian law that allowed its citizens to sue foreign leaders for alleged war crimes. A Belgian court dismissed a suit filed against the first President Bush, Dick Cheney and Colin Powell for bombing civilians during the 1991 Persian Gulf War after the Belgian Parliament repealed key features of the law in 2003. Brauer sits on Bank of America’s “private client” board (see Franklin Lavin). Hunter Engineering received $354,000 in federal contracts in fiscal 2002, mainly in sales of vehicle maintenance equipment to the military.
