John Chain has chaired the Thomas Group management consulting firm since 1998, after a long military career. His military appointments include assistant to the Air Force Secretary in 1978 and State Department Politico-Military Affairs Director in 1984. Before retiring from the military in 1991, he was Commander in Chief of the Strategic Air Command and oversaw the Reagan administration’s MX Ballistic Missile Rail operations. Upon military retirement, Burlington Northern (see Matthew Rose) appointed him as an executive vice president. Chain became president of Quarterdeck Equity Partners in 1996 and has sat on the boards of ConAgra, Kemper Insurance, Northrop Grumman and RJ Reynolds. His Thomas Group received more than $1 million in Pentagon consulting contracts in fiscal 2002.
