This car dealer pleaded no contest in ‘92 to misdemeanor charges that he had defrauded 80 employees of a previous car dealership out of more than $20,000 in wages and benefits. Zangara was put on a three-year probation and ordered to pay the affected workers $73,000 in restitution. This skeleton in Zangara’s closet became an issue in New Mexico’s ’98 attorney general race. After GOP candidate David Iglesias attacked Democratic opponent Patricia Madrid for having a convicted felon volunteering for her campaign, she accused him of being bankrolled by a car dealer who was indicted for fraud and embezzlement.
