Secchia helped build up the Michigan GOP and was a major backer of President Bush. That administration, sharply criticized for doling out ambassadorships to top contributors, appointed Secchia as ambassador to Italy.  The choice was controversial because of Secchia’s crude behavior–including reports of mooning one woman at a GOP convention and calling another a “bitch.”
