A subsidiary of Germany’s HOCHTIEF, Turner is one of the world’s largest construction companies. Turner—which built Madison Square Garden and the UN Secretariat—depends heavily on government contracts. Recently Turner co-managed construction of Little Rock’s Alltel Arena, which cost taxpayers $80 million. The arena went over schedule and budget. Key pillars and beams were misaligned; 90 percent of the welds supporting the main concourse flunked industry standards; and chunks of concrete fell crashing to the floor. The various contractors involved have squabbled over who is to blame.
