Republican Texas Governor Rick Perry
As Texas' longest-serving governor, Rick Perry raised $98.9 million from 2001 through October 23, 2010. Perry raised almost $49 million (or 50 percent of this money) from 193 mega donors who gave him $100,000 or more. The Republican Governor's Association ranks as the governor's No. 1 donor, ostensibly contributing $4 million. (In 2010 a court found that Bob Pery was the true source of a $500,000 contribution that the Perry campaign attributed to the Governor's Association.) Houston homebuilder Bob Perry (no relation) gave the governor more than $2.5 million to claim his No. 2 spot. Dallas billionaire Harold Simmons, who is converting Andrews County into the nation's default nuclear dump, ranks No. 3. Governor Perry's top donors are dominated by corporate PACs, executives and trade associations. Just two donors gave at least $100,000 to both candidates: Houston oilman James Flores and Austin retirees Joe & Teresa Long. Flores and the Longs both backed White this time after supporting Perry in previous elections.
